Mastering Your Golf Stance: Tips for Every Club

Understanding your golf stance for each shot is very important for golf. At first, I did not understand. I put all my balls in the middle of my stance. My Driver is put inline with my left heel like all the teachers tell you. Understanding your stance and how it plays in your wedges, driver, woods, irons will help you play better. Mastering your golf stance is highly important- read about my adventure below.

Irons Stance and how to setup

Short irons, I would put them closer to the middle but does that really help? Yes and No, golf is a game of geometry and math really. I am not great at Math but I understand geometry with the degrees of your heads. Getting a baseline for great shots means you need to spend some time playing with stance. My best shots usually come from my 7 or 8 Irons. These are the ones I find closest to the center of my stance. Longer irons go 1 ball in front of my stance. A 4 iron is set close to my driver because it almost shares the same degree.

Wedges Shots from bunkers and green sides.

This is where I am struggling at the moment. My last round was a disaster. My short game within 100 yards was particularly troublesome. I wasn’t staying on the green. I was scorching over the greens. It was bad, I was at a loss. After the round, I came home and started going back to fundamentals, the foundation of my wedges. I figured out it was my stance I was putting my head behind the ball. Not leaning ahead and almost hitting wedge shots like I would irons. That was my problem, I was not in the correct stance for the clubs I was using. In the game of Golf, small changes make big impacts.

Woods Stances for mastering distance.

This is one of my favorite clubs. My Tour Edge E724-3W, so forgiving so easy to hit. I know some of you are like Tour Edge…but until you find the grace to hit one and see the power and flight. It really is an underrated brand that people do not use but should. Now, on to the stance of my 3 and 5 wood. The 3-wood stance is just like my driver I line it up to the left heel. I can punch it about 250 if I get a good hit on it. I find this stance to be perfect for me – no golf setup or swing are the same. You can not setup like the pro’s and expect to hit like them. Your swing, characteristics, speed are all different.

Driver Stance for Slicers and how I changed

I struggled with my driver and a slice for well over a year. I have watched many golfing tutorials on YouTube, I have watched video after video. Range trips galore, Hand placement, alignment aid, swing trainers and more. I was lost of it left me not using my driver for sometime. About 2 months ago I was at a small local 18 hole course. I was on the back 9 and I needed my driver to work with me. I was playing Solo and had a ground of 4 in front of me. The group I was paired with left after the front 9 due to the weather and pace of play. I was on hold 14 of this course. There were houses down the left side. Water was down the right. It was a slicer’s nightmare. I have been working on my grip this entire round. I was working on small tweaks to try get the face closed. This particular hole, I found my self frustrated at the game and my Driver.

Continued working on my Stance with my Driver

I have changed my grip. I have changed my stance. I was aligned more left now than I should have been. I was ready to pull my bag and head home, But I decided to chance my stance. I put the ball in the very front of my left foot. It was a strange setup. I was willing to try anything. I drew the club back and punched it hard. The ball went dead straight into a house on the left side of the fairway, about 100 yards out. I dropped my driver in horror as I just hit this house, I was embarrassed. I sat silent for a moment waiting for someone to come out and yell. Luckily, there was none of that and I got in my cart ready to drive up and meet the homeowner. No one was home and I didn’t break a window. The house had Plexiglas over the windows and the siding was battle worn. I lost the ball as it bounced off and went somewhere and I have no idea where.

Found something in my Stance

That one hole #14 changed everything for me. I assume at this point I need a shorter shaft for my driver to align the ball right. I play with it in front of my left foot now. I can hit dead straight now, no slice, no fade. I have played a few more rounds after that. It has really changed the way I can play golf. It also changed how I use my driver.

Conclusion – The end to mastering your stance

As I have said before, small changes can make a large impact. Do not be afraid to get out on the range or course and test out different clubs and ball alignment. Look at world number 1, Scottie Scheffler and his ending to ball striking, his footwork is damaging my ankles.
